Roselle - Roselle Park and Cranford Rotary Consider Participation in a Rotary Humanitarian Project in Ecuador

At a recent joint meeting of The Rotary Clubs of Roselle - Roselle Park and the Rotary Club of Cranford, NJ, members of both clubs listened to a presentation by fellow Rotarian Sharan Jain about a humanitarian effort in Ecuador sponsored by Rotary.

Sharan Jain, a member of the Rotary Club of New Brunswick, NJ, is spearheading a Rotary initiative in central New Jersey’s District 7510 (38 clubs and 1050 members) - a Rotary International Global Grant.  The goal of this Grant is to build toilet facilities for 70 people in Quilanga City in the Province of Loja, Ecuador.

Currently, these people satisfy their biological needs outdoors which is contaminating the land, water and environment causing the proliferation of many diseases such as cholera, typhoid, diarrhea and various other infectious diseases.  Therefore, the success of this project will have a widespread beneficial effect on the health of the inhabitants and their environment.

The total cost of the project is $38,500.

A cooperative effort of Rotarians in the United States and Ecuador, the following Rotary entities will share the cost:  Rotary and Rotaract Club of Loja, Ecuador.  (A Rotaract Club is a Rotary service, leadership and community service organization for young men and women between the ages 18–30.); Rotary Club of New Brunswick, the Rotaract Club of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ; NJ Rotary District 7510; Ecuador Rotary District which includes Laja Province and Quilanga City; Rotary International (which will provide matching funds for funds from districts and clubs); and other Rotary Clubs in NJ Rotary District 7510 who are now considering participation in the project including Rotary Club of Roselle - Roselle Park and Rotary Club of Cranford.

This project falls under one of Rotary International’s  Six Area’s of Focus - Clean Water and Sanitation - which makes it eligible for Rotary International matching funds in a Rotary International Global Grant.  The other areas of focus include Promoting Peace, Fighting Disease, Saving Mothers and Children, Promoting Education and Growing Local Economies.
